Kilbirnie Skirt (1915-1918) Pattern || #2103

The Kilbirnie Skirt is a playful gathered skirt based on an extant garment.  It features the Edwardian version of a 'paper bag' waist: a very high waist held in place with a boned internal waistband, with cord gathering and a small standing frill.  

Fun details and thoughtful construction means it works equally well for historical costuming, historybounding, and modern wear.

View A replicates the original skirt, with rounded patch pockets with cord gathered ruffles that mirror the waist ruffle.

View B is inspired by other skirts of the period, and features decorative front buttons and triangular pockets with buttoned flaps.

The skirt closes at center front with a placket fastened with snap fasteners. The back panel of the skirt may be cut on the fold, or with a center back seam, depending on the width of the fabric.

The skirt is 38''/96cm long: the most common length for ready-made skirts in the 1915-18 period.   It is designed to end at high ankle approximately 2''/5cm above the malleolus bones (the small bones that stick out of either side of your ankle).

The skirt can also be worn with a matching blouse, such as the Selina Blouse, to make a dress in two parts, or attached to a skirt pattern to make a dress.

The Kilbirnie Skirt can be worn over a 1910s corset, such as the Rilla Corset, or without a corset as a modern garment.
