Ettie Petticoat & Skirt (1890-1920) Pattern || #2104

The Ettie Petticoat is a versatile four-gored petticoat or skirt with all the lovely finishing details that make late-Victorian and early 20th century lingerie so beautiful.

With four views based on extant garments and original patterns, the Ettie creates the correct silhouette for fashions from 1890-1920, but also looks fantastic as a modern skirt.

A drawstring waist on Views A & B, and elastic waist on C & D make the Ettie comfortable and adjustable.  A placket at the front-left makes it easy to get in and out of without twisting round.  

The detailed instructions cover multiple ways to insert lace using historically accurate machine and hand-sewing techniques. 

View A has a deep gathered ruffle trimmed with two rows of insertion lace topped by three tucks. A narrow 'dust ruffle' sits under the deep over ruffle and protects the hem. It is finished with lace hemming, fastens with buttons, is 40'' long at center back, and has a drawstring waist with fullness at the back of the skirt.

View B  has a flat front and back, and slightly gathered ruffle on the side panels trimmed with two rows of lace insertion. It is finished with lace hemming, fastens with buttons, is 38'' long at center back, and has a drawstring waist

View C  has a deep gathered ruffle trimmed with two rows of insertion lace, as well as an inner 'dust ruffle'. It is finished with lace hemming, fastens with snap fasteners, is 36'' long at center back, and has an elastic waist.

View D  has a slightly gathered ruffle with two rows of narrower lace insertion. It is finished with lace hemming, fastens with snap fasteners, is 36'' long at center back, and has an elastic waist.

Wear the Ettie over the Rilla Corset.  View A works fits perfectly under the Historical Fantail Skirt.  Views C & D work perfectly under the Kilbirnie Skirt.

It features the moderately full A-line silhouette seen in 1890-93, again from 1897-1901, and again from 1906-1910, as well as under practical walking skirts and less fashionable clothes from 1900-1906. It has a deep gathered ruffle trimmed with two rows of insertion lace topped by three tucks. A narrow 'dust ruffle' sits under the deep over ruffle and protects the hem. It is finished with lace hemming, fastens with buttons, is 40'' long at center back, and has a drawstring waist with fullness at the back of the skirt.

View B is based on an extant petticoat dating from between 1909-1914, and features the slim silhouette of those years. It has a flat front and back, and slightly gathered ruffle on the side panels trimmed with two rows of lace insertion. It is finished with lace hemming, fastens with buttons, is 38'' long at center back, and has a drawstring waist

View C is based on a 1917 sewing pattern and features the full 'crinoline revival' silhouette of 1915-1917. It has a deep gathered ruffle trimmed with two rows of insertion lace, as well as an inner 'dust ruffle'. It is finished with lace hemming, fastens with snap fasteners, is 36'' long at center back, and has an elastic waist.

View D is based on an extant ca. 1917 petticoat and suits the shorter hems and slimmer silhouette seen from 1915 to 1920. It has a slightly gathered ruffle with two rows of narrower lace insertion. It is finished with lace hemming, fastens with snap fasteners, is 36'' long at center back, and has an elastic waist.

Recommended Fabrics:

Lightweight cottons including voile, lawn, batiste, & sateen. Lightweight silks including taffeta and thin tussah silk. Thin wools including lightweight wool flannels. Light-midweight linens and midweight rayons/viscoses if making it as a modern skirt.

View A is shown on a Size 38 model.  It is made up as a historical petticoat in lavender silk taffeta with embroidered net lace insertion.  

View B is shown on a Size 36 dressform.  It is made up as a historical petticoat in dark lavender cotton voile with modern lace insertion.

View C is shown in on a Size 36 dressform.  It is made up as a historical petticoat in white cotton lawn with modern lace insertion.

View D is shown first on a Size 38 model.  It is made up as a modern skirt in floral cotton lawn with cotton lace insertions.  

The second View D model wears a Size 46 historical petticoat in white cotton lawn with antique cotton lace.  She wears her Ettie petticoat over a Rilla Corset.
